About Us

Andrew Sisson (Managing Director) established Balanced Equity Management in 1988, making it one of Australia’s earliest boutique fund managers. Initially focused on investing solely in Australia’s 50 largest companies on behalf of wholesale clients, the firm expanded its investment universe to include Australia’s 100 largest companies at the request of clients in 2003.

Under the guidance of Andrew Sisson (Managing Director), the firm has recruited a team of investment professionals including experienced Lead Analysts / Investment Managers, Equities Analysts and a dedicated Dealer. Balanced Equity Management has grown into one of the country’s largest and most successful wholesale Australian equities fund managers with funds under management of AUD 9 billion as at December 2018.

On 6 July 2011 Balanced Equity Management became a wholly owned subsidiary of Franklin Templeton Investments Australia Limited.

Balanced Equity Management is driven by its values. It strictly adheres to a code of ethics and its compliance obligations. It emphasises the importance of complying with the spirit and not just the letter of each of its requirements, and monitors its in-house standards for conformance to best practice in the industry.

Client focus

The management team treats its fiduciary duties to clients seriously and emphasises the importance of acting in its clients’ best interests at all times. The research team considers the best interests of clients when making investment recommendations or conducting investment transactions, focusing on outcomes that benefit the client (e.g. after tax returns) rather than itself.

The management team requires absolute integrity from staff ensuring strict adherence to its code of ethics, whilst also expecting management and board directors of companies in which the firm invests to act with integrity. The research team considers the integrity of company management and board directors when making investment decisions and voting recommendations.

The research team considers the corporate governance of each company when making investment recommendations or conducting investment transactions. Balanced Equity Management regularly engages with company management and board directors discussing issues including the primacy of shareholder interests, company management remuneration structures, tax considerations, corporate strategy and operations. The research team is also focused on the sustainability of the business model of the companies in the investment universe and embeds environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into company valuations.
